Spice it up!

August 13th, 2008 by Wendy Young | Filed under Healthy Living.

For thousands of years, before the advent of modern medicine, herbs were an important part of treatment for a variety of ailments. With the advent of hospitals, HMOs, and fancy degrees most people discount herbs as unneeded in this day and age. Not so fast!

Studies on herbs are being conducted all the time. One study tested 24 common herb-cabinet staples and found some interesting results. One of the best performers? Cinnamon. Who would have thought that an herb found in so many great tasting sweets is so powerful that it can actually lower blood sugar, even when included in a sweet desert like apple pie.

But researcher Diane Hartle, PhD, says it is best not to focus on any single herb or spice, suggesting that seasoning foods with a variety of spices is best.

In a news release, Hartle noted that different polyphenols have different mechanisms of action within the body. “If you set up a good herb and spice cabinet and season your food liberally, you could double or even triple the medicinal value of your meal without increasing the calorie content.”

So, next time you want to add a flavor to your dish, try bypassing the salt and go for the spice rack instead.
