Try Yoga for Prenatal Fitness
Yoga is a wonderful fitness option for pregnant women. Unlike higher impact options, yoga is often a program that can be followed throughout a women’s pregnancy. I practiced prenatal yoga during both of my pregnancies. As long as it is OK with your doctor, I highly recommend that you give prenatal yoga a try. Some benefits for yoga during pregnancy include:
- Relief from back pain and nausea
- Increased strength and stamina
- Improvement in breathing techniques (often helpful during labor)
- Increased flexibility
Lotus Petal Yoga recently published a Prenatal Yoga video. It is available in both download and DVD formats. The running time is 50 minutes. Here is the video summary:

Communicate with your baby, relax and nurture yourself in this supportive yet energizing class. In this class you will flow into postures specifically tailored to the needs of your changing pregnant body. Focus is placed on the breath as you connect deeper with your unborn child. Hip opening postures are emphasized to help to tone and strengthen the pelvic floor and prepare the body for childbirth.
I have previewed the video and highly recommend it. The vocal instructions are soft and easy to follow. The moves are gentle and appropriate for all fitness levels.
