Start Your Day Off Right

This fast, healthy breakfast begins right in your blender. We all know that fruit is a great source of vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants. A fruit smoothie is a smart way to start the day. If you’re in a rush you can even drink it on your way to work.

Throw in a few veggies in for good measure. Adding spinach, wheat grass, or carrot juice to your smoothie can really knock out part of your goal of 5 fruits and veggies a day. Plus it tastes great!

I clean and freeze my fruit first, that way I have everything ready before the week begins. You can always use ice cubes, if your fruit is fresh, to create that thick frozen texture. Of course, if you don’t like super cold drinks, you can always leave the ice out.

In your blender add:

  • 1/2 frozen banana or handful of ice cubes
(or yogurt if you don’t want it frozen)
  • 1 cup assorted organic fruit – fresh or frozen depending on what you have on hand
(don’t forget the blueberries – they are a super food!)
  • 1/2 – 1 cup liquid – Almond Breeze, Unsweetened, Vanilla, 32 oz.
is my favorite and only 40 calories a cup!
(skim milk, soy or rice milk, organic juice, pomegranate juice all work – experiment to find your favorite)
  • handful of spinach or other green (optional)

Blend until smooth and enjoy. Experiment with juices and fruits that you don’t normally eat. You can add protein powder or other supplements, but don’t forget to look at the calories. Some are higher in calories than you would think.

Before you know it you’ll be searching for the overripe bags of bananas at the grocery store. They are usually ripe enough to freeze, plus they are half price!
